Antibiotic Residues, Antimicrobial Resistance and Intervention Strategies of Foodborne Pathogens
Yongning Wu
Food products are becoming increasingly affected by the use of antibiotics, as the transfer of residual veterinary drugs, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its genes (ARGs) occurs through unexplained mechanisms, representing a public health threat. As part of the framework proposed by One Health, it is essential to include information on animal and food chain pathogens in AMR surveillance programs, since human and animal health are interconnected. Therefore, this Special Issue will pay specific attention to human, animal, plant, food, and environment interfaces, and will try to explore intervention strategies against foodborne pathogens. Furthermore, it will characterize the variation in the composition of a healthy human gut microbiome in correlation with antibiotic usage and yoghurt consumption. The Special Issue focus on intervention strategies and food safety in light of antibiotic usage in animal and plants, and discuss ARB and ARG in fu

Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health
Clare Heaviside
Climate change poses a serious challenge to our health and wellbeing. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, and the direct impacts of changes in temperature have direct impacts on health. At the same time, broader environmental change affects infectious disease risk, air pollution, and other forms of exposure. The different ways in which climate change will affect health are complex, interactive, and different communities are disproportionately affected. International actions such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals recognise the future risks to society and acknowledge that we are already committed to a certain level of climate change. Future adaptation measures therefore need careful assessment and implementation for us to be able to minimise the potential risks from climate change and, at the same time, maximise the potential health benefits of a cleaner, greener world. Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Global Diseases and Human Well-Being
Giorgio I. Russo
The wide spread of COVID-19 has had significant and negative effects on human well-being, but it has also had a negative impact on many important diseases. It has necessitated a major reorganisation of emergency care facilities to accommodate the additional workload anticipated with the rapid surge in critically ill patients with COVID-19. Previous reports have demonstrated a reduction in admissions for different conditions such as acute coronary syndrome or decreased use of coronary procedures in various countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an increase in out-of-hospital deaths and long-term complications of myocardial infarction and missed opportunities to offer secondary prevention treatment for patients with coronary heart disease. In this context, we do not know what impacts these events may have had on psychology and sexuality. In fact, the global pandemic of COVID-19 has significantly impacted people’s sexual desire and behaviours.Besides these events, the da

Frontiers in Antimicrobial Biomaterials
Helena Felgueiras
Biomaterials can be used as implantable devices or drug delivery platforms, and have significant impacts on a patient’s quality of life. Indeed, every year, a substantial number of new biomaterials and scaffolding systems are engineered and introduced in the biomedical field, with increased health benefits. However, their long-term use can be threatened by the adhesion and proliferation of microorganisms or by the formation of fibrosis. Pathogenic microorganisms may cause local infections and lead to implant failures. Additionally, they can hinder the delivery of therapeutic molecules by specialized carriers, rendering them ineffective. Many alternatives have been proposed over the years to prevent such events, including the use of antiseptics and antibiotics, or physical modifications of the biomaterial surface with the incorporation of biomolecules. From specialized polymers and functional groups to silver and, more recently, antimicrobial peptides and natural extracts, different f

The Role of Biofilms in the Development and Dissemination of Microbial Resistance within the Food Industry
Efstathios Giaouris
Biofilms are multicellular sessile microbial communities embedded in hydrated extracellular polymeric matrices. Their formation is common in microbial life in most environments, whereas those formed on food-processing surfaces are of considerable interest in the context of food hygiene. Biofilm cells express properties that are distinct from planktonic ones, in particular, due to their notorious resistance to antimicrobial agents. Thus, a special feature of biofilms is that once they have developed, they are hard to eradicate, even when careful sanitization procedures are regularly applied. A large amount of ongoing research has investigated how and why surface-attached microbial communities develop such resistance, and several mechanisms can be acknowledged, such as heterogeneous metabolic activity, cell adaptive responses, diffusion limitations, genetic and functional diversification, and microbial interactions. The articles contained in this Special Issue deal with biofilms of some

ADP-Ribosylation in Pathogens
Anthony K L Leung
ADP-ribosylation was discovered over 60 years ago, and much of the research focused on bacterial toxins that employed ADP-ribosylation to kill host cells. However, in the last 20 years, the field has identified many cases where host-mediated ADP-ribosylation can either promote or repress pathogenic infections. It is clear that ADP-ribosylation is a key component of the innate immune response in eukaryotes and bacteria, and many of the mechanistic details of how ADP-ribosylation impacts pathogens have yet to be uncovered. In this Special Issue, we have focused on publishing unique reviews and primary research on the topics of pathogens and ADP-ribosylation. We hope that you will enjoy this collection.
