E-Book Therapeutic Potential for Cannabis and Cannabinoids
Kedokteran & Kesehatan 2024
Therapeutic Potential for Cannabis and Cannabinoids
Wesley M. Raup-Konsavage
Cannabis has a history of medical use dating back millennia; however, the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes fell out of favor in the middle of the last century. There is currently a renewed interest in the potential medicinal value of this plant, as well as individual compounds produced by Cannabis (as well as synthetic analogs). Currently, nearly 50 countries permit the medical use of cannabis, and over a dozen other countries have legalized cannabis-based products (CBD, Sativex, Dronabinol, etc.) for medical use. While there exists a plethora of anecdotal reports indicating that cannabis can treat a variety of diseases, there is a limited amount of strong, evidence-based scientific data to support these claims.  This Special Edition of Biomedicines, “Therapeutic Potential for Cannabis and Cannabinoids”, was dedicated to providing evidence for the medicinal value of cannabis to treat human illness and disease. Topics included, but were not limited to, preclinical animal models

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibodies and Vaccine Development
Jianhui Nie
The development and deployment of safe, effective, affordable, and accessible vaccines are essential for reducing transmission and disease severity. A central component of vaccine evaluation and immune protection against SARS-CoV-2 is the measurement of neutralizing antibodies, which serve as key indicators of antiviral immune activity. Accordingly, there is an urgent need for standardized, reliable, and reproducible in vitro potency assays to assess antiviral products throughout preclinical and clinical development. Neutralizing antibody assays are critical not only for evaluating vaccine efficacy but also for characterizing immune responses in COVID-19 patients, asymptomatic individuals, and vaccinated populations. However, current SARS-CoV-2 neutralization assays—including live virus, recombinant virus, pseudotyped virus, and competition-based assays—exhibit substantial methodological diversity. Differences in protocols, reagents, and result interpretation across laboratories have led to significant variability, limiting comparability between studies and vaccines and hindering the establishment of robust correlates of protection. This reprint provides a systematic and up-to-date overview of advances in SARS-CoV-2 neutralization assay development and vaccine evaluation. By summarizing methodological progress and remaining challenges, it aims to serve as a reference for researchers, clinicians, regulatory scientists, and public health professionals involved in COVID-19 research and response.

Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Genitourinary Cancers
Piotr Radziszewski
Genitourinary cancers are diseases affecting an increasing number of people, the diagnosis and treatment of which are currently undergoing fast and sometimes dramatic changes due to the current landscape of suboptimal management of these diseases. A characteristic feature of urological cancer treatment is the significant heterogeneity of patients (including different stages of local advancement, different locations of metastases, the heterogeneity of pathological findings, etc.). Therefore, in modern urologic oncology, there remains the unmet need of predicting the response to modern treatments, and new diagnostic methods, including but not limited to point-of-care diagnostics, represent a challenge to current guidelines and require verification. Additionally, further development awaits as far as sufficient neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment in the perioperative setting are concerned. However, recent advancements in systematic treatment, i.e., immunotherapy, have shed light on new treatment paradigms to be implemented in various clinical scenarios, including localized disease, and recent progress in minimally invasive surgical techniques has lead to revisions to the treatment of many urological tumors.

Pharmaceutical Residues in the Environment
Jolanta Kumirska
Pharmaceuticals, due to their pseudo-persistence and biological activity as well as their extensive use in human and veterinary medicine, are a class of environmental contaminants that is of emerging concern. In contrast to some conventional pollutants, they are continuously delivered at low levels, which might give rise to toxicity even without high persistence rates. These chemicals are designed to have a specific physiological mode of action and to resist frequently inactivation before exerting their intended therapeutic effect. These features, among others, result in the bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals which are responsible for toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It is extremely important to know how to remove them from the environment and/or how to implement procedures or treatments resulting in their biological inactivation. Although great advances have been made in their detection in aquatic matrices, there remains limited analytical methodologies available
