E-Book Amphiphilic Molecules, Interfaces and Colloids
Sains & Riset Terapan 2024
Amphiphilic Molecules, Interfaces and Colloids
Khristo Khristov
Colloids, such as emulsions, foams, sols, and gels, play an integral role in living organisms, the natural environment, resource extraction, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, processing industries, and basically, in almost all aspects of our everyday life. To a large extent, colloid stability and functionality are determined by the properties of interfaces between dispersed and continuous phases and by the surface forces acting at micro- and nanoscale levels. It is the amphiphilic molecules that are capable of altering colloidal system properties, thus changing the overall system behavior. This is why a comprehensive understanding of the amphiphile molecular structure and the respective interactions taking place at the interfaces ensures effective control over colloidal system properties. The contributions included in this Reprint highlight the relation between amphiphile molecular structure, self-assembly in solutions, molecular arrangements at interfaces, specific interactions at micro- and nanoscales, and the properties displayed by the colloidal systems. The included research spans from fundamental studies on the physicochemical behavior of colloidal systems to the design of innovative solutions for practical applications.

Feature Papers to Celebrate the Inaugural Issue of Standards
Peter Glavič
Standards can be international, national, regional, or corporate. They cover production and consumption, social responsibility, health and safety, quality management, laboratories, diverse devices, and equipment, to mention the most popular ones. They are the basis for our everyday activities: air, water, and food quality, information security, codes, accounting, reporting, etc. Despite the great number of existing standards, new and improved ones are appearing daily. The standardization process includes development, acceptance, and implementation of new or improved standards. The stakeholders can be companies, standardization institutions, governments, users, interest groups, professionals, and scientists. The international organization for standardization, ISO, has a guidance document on new work with three parts: 1) new standardized areas, 2) new fields of work, and 3) new work item proposals within existing committees. New standards need to be inspected, verified, and their quali

Mineral Chemistry of Granitoids
Ignez de Pinho Guimarães
The aim of this reprint is to emphasize the crucial role of mineral chemistry in understanding the crystallization parameters (temperature, pressure, and oxygen fugacity) during the petrological evolution of granitic magmas. Contributions from leading experts in the field offer fresh perspectives and in-depth analyses, enhancing our understanding of granitic systems and their broader geological significance. Given that the chemistry and redox conditions of the parental magma significantly influence the composition of minerals in granites, this reprint highlights the importance of mineral chemistry in unraveling magmatic processes, ranging from conventional mineral chemistry, involving the analysis of primary ferromagnesian phases that provide valuable insights into the nature of the magma and its affinity with various magmatic series, to more recent approaches that involve studying trace element signatures in accessory minerals to trace the source and petrological evolution of granitic magmas. This reprint demonstrates how these methods serve as powerful tools for studying granitic systems by employing less mobile chemical signatures to complement conventional mineral chemistry data.
