E-Book Surface Engineering of Biomaterials
Teknik & Energi 2024
Surface Engineering of Biomaterials
Saber AminYavari
Acceptance or rejection of implanted biomaterials is strongly dependent on an appropriate bio-interface between the biomaterial and its surrounding tissue. Given the fact that most bulk materials only provide mechanical stability for the implant and may not interact with tissues and fluids in vivo, surface modification and engineering of biomaterials plays a significant role towards addressing major clinical unmet challenges. Increasing data showed that altering surface properties including physiochemical, topographical, and mechanical characteristics, is a promising approach to tackle these problems. Surface engineering of biomaterials could influence the subsequent tissue and cellular events such as protein adsorption, cellular recolonization, adhesion, proliferation, migration, and the inflammatory response. Moreover, it could be based on mimicking the complex cell structure and environment or hierarchical nature of the bone. In this case, the design of nano/micrometer patterns and

Zinc-dependent matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) belong to metzincins that comprise not only 23 human MMPs but also other metalloproteinases, such as 21 human ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain) and 19 secreted ADAMTSs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase thrombospondin domain). The many setbacks from the clinical trials of broad-spectrum MMP inhibitors for cancer indications in the late 1990s emphasized the extreme complexity of the participation of these proteolytic enzymes in biology. This editorial mini-review summarizes the Special Issue, which includes four review articles and 10 original articles that highlight the versatile roles of MMPs, ADAMs, and ADAMTSs, in normal physiology as well as in neoplastic and destructive processes in tissue. In addition, we briefly discuss the unambiguous involvement of MMPs in wound healing. Related Books Matrix Metalloproteinases in Health and Disease Public Health & Healthcare ... Application and Management of Smart Energy for Smart Cities
Daniele Menniti
The rapid growth of the global population and its increasing concentration in cities is reshaping the energy landscape. By 2050, nearly 70\% of the world’s population will live in urban areas, turning cities into massive hubs of energy consumption. At the same time, the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel dependence calls for a stronger integration of renewable energy sources (RESs). However, large cities face limited space for local RES production, shifting the focus to suburban and peri-urban areas where photovoltaic, wind, and distributed generation can flourish. Ensuring a reliable and sustainable urban energy supply therefore requires innovative approaches to store, share, and optimally use energy produced beyond city centers. This Special Issue presents a collection of outstanding studies that explore smart solutions enabling efficient energy flows between urban demand and suburban RESs. The contributions address a wide spectrum of topics, including renewable energy communities, energy aggregation, storage technologies, demand response and management, and innovative electricity market mechanisms. Together, these works advance our understanding of how emerging green energy technologies can improve system adequacy, security, and resilience.

Tribology in Germany
Dirk Bartel
In today’s world of ever-increasing energy demands, combined with an environmentally and cost-driven desire to conserve resources, friction and wear are becoming increasingly important. To avoid friction and wear, save energy, protect the environment, and improve the performance of machines and systems, lubrication is one of the most effective strategies. However, design measures, new materials and coatings, a better understanding of the fundamental tribological relationships, and the predictability of tribological systems also make decisive contributions toward environmentally compatible and efficient machines and systems, with the goals of having lower energy consumption in the utilization phase, less wear, and the longer service life of mechanical systems. The visibility of German tribology is internationally characterized by the automotive industry and mechanical engineering. Despite its basic orientation, tribological research is always focused on products and machine elements like rolling and journal bearings, gears, and elastomers. Currently, tribological work is concentrating on topics such as sustainability, raw material availability, the reduction in emissions in the use phase, recyclability, defossilization in mobility and industry, and digitalization. With the 65th anniversary of the GfT, this Special Issue presents the latest tribological research and developments in Germany, with 21 insightful contributions.

Advances in Fuel Energy
Leszek Chybowski
Ongoing climate change, the depletion of natural resources, and growing energy demands have rendered the production of new types of fuels for energy systems, including combustion engines and boilers, very crucial. Using alternative fuels, either as direct propellants or as additives to classic fossil fuels, may have both positive and negative consequences for energy machines and the environment. The most popular alternative fuels are biofuels, recycled fuels, synthetic fuels, ammonia, ethanol, methanol, ethylene, and hydrogen. Their mixtures with common fuels such as kerosene, gasoline, diesel oil, heating oil, LNG, CNG, LPG, etc., are also often employed. This SI aims to present the latest research results related to the use of various types of fuels to power combustion engines, boilers, and other thermal machines in maritime, road, railway, and air transport applications. Additionally, we are interested in the combination of these fuels in stationary power and heating plants. We intend for the studies published in this SI to highlight the impact of alternative fuels and their combinations with other fuels (classic and/or alternative) on the level of exhaust gases emissions (NOx, SOx, PMs, aldehydes, etc.), energy performance (power, torque, speed, and energy efficiency), component wear, reliability and safety of operation, cost effectiveness, as well as the functionalities (maintainability, noise, and vibrations) of machines and devices powered by these fuels.
