E-Book Sustainable Rural Development Projects
Lingkungan & Alam 2024
Sustainable Rural Development Projects
Adolfo Cazorla Montero
This reprint compiles peer-reviewed articles that synthesize more than nine years of collaboration within the Metauniversity for Sustainable Development. The initiative began in 2016 when FAO selected the GESPLAN Research Group of the Polytechnic University of Madrid to promote the Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (RAI) across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain. Since then, 46 universities and 52 agrifood companies, associations, and cooperatives from 12 countries have built a shared academic and institutional commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility. The first two articles establish the conceptual foundation. The first defines the Metauniversity as a “university of universities” integrating three pillars: the RAI principles, the research university paradigm, and the Metauniversity concept. The second article, through the Working with People (WWP) model, provides empirical validation in seven countries, demonstrating how rural development projects aligned with the RAI principles strengthen sustainable rural development outcomes. The remaining contributions present applied experiences in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain, built through collaboration among cooperatives, rural communities, universities, governments, companies, agrifood enterprises, and food banks. These studies show that the RAI principles and the WWP model become truly transformative when translated into shared learning and collective action.

Silver-Based Antimicrobials
Raymond J. Turner
There is some talk about an antibiotic Armageddon due to quickly developing resistance towards commercially available antibiotics. For the most part, the classical antibiotic pipeline has dried up, and antibiotic resistance to any new drugs quickly develops. It is here that metal-based antimicrobials can step forward as possible solutions in this antimicrobial resistance era. The biological targets of metal atoms are more diverse, thus making it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance compared with classical antibiotics. The metal silver has been used since antiquity for wound healing and water purification. At present, it is the most prevalent antimicrobial metal used in healthcare, industry, and consumer products. Silver is being used in the form of ionic salt, colloids, or in specific nanomaterials, and as described in this book, it can be applied as mixtures with other antimicrobials or coating composites. The different formulations are explored for their efficacy agains

Fuzzy Sets in Business Management, Finance, and Economics, 2nd Edition
Jorge de Andres Sanchez
Since the publication of Lotfi A. Zadeh’s seminal paper “Fuzzy Sets” in 1965 within the journal Information and Control, there has been constant growth in the theoretical developments and practical applications of fuzzy set theory and related mathematical tools. These tools have been applied widely, both by industry and academic research, to decision-making and economics due to their versatility. On the one hand, they can efficiently represent and handle uncertain and vague information such as subjective judgements, non-precise observations on variables, or ill-defined relations between variables. On the other hand, they make implementing computations or identifying patterns in data much easier. To do so, fuzzy set theory provides a lot of mathematical techniques in fields such as fuzzy data analysis, fuzzy multiple criteria decision making, fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis or fuzzy expert systems. Business management, decision-making, or the evaluation of public policies a
